L.I.I.A.R analysis of NME

                                            Front cover
Language:
The Main Image, is displaying Simon Cowell who has a big impact on the music industry as his two shows create new artists every year. The winners of his shows always release a new album every year which links in with the image, his shows and the magazine. The shot of Simon Cowell is in medium close up, this is to show the expression on his face as he is pulling a smug look on his face. The background of the front page image is snowflakes, this links in with the whole theme of this particular edition of NME which is Christmas. The Background gives the whole feel of Christmas, which makes the edition more special is it is also a ‘Double issue’. The anchorage links in with the image of Simon Cowell, 'The Grinch speaks' the text is in a white and is bold. The use of the world Grinch describes Simon Cowell as in the past people has described Simon Cowell as being grumpy. The anchorage is the biggest piece of text on the page other than the masthead, this is to attract the reader into buying the magazine as the article about Simon Cowell will grab the reader’s attention. The flashes are situated above and below the anchorage all of the flash are in the shape of christmas bobbles, this represents the theme of the magazine which is Christmas as it is the Christmas. This also links in with the anchorage ‘the Grinch speaks’ as the Grinch is known as the one who stole Christmas. In each of the bobbles there is individual articles listed in them, this is effective as it purposely persuades the audience into reading more about each of the articles. The cover line is located under the anchorage, this represents Simon Cowells personality as he can be aggressive, which creates a clash between the magazine and Simon Cowell. The masthead of the magazine is ‘NME’ is the abbreviation of new music experience this is a catchy title and will stick in the audience head. Above the masthead is the sell line, ‘MASSIVE CHRISTMAS DOUBLE EDITION. Sell lines are used in order to persuade the audience into wanting to buy the products, this is why they are situated above or below the masthead as the masthead is the biggest piece of text on the page and will be the first thing the audience look at. Meaning the sell line will be the second thing that they look at on the front cover. The teasing contents are located in the left third, below the anchorage and the cover line. The teasing contents has two separate piece of texts the first is the biggest piece saying ‘6 free content’ grabbing the reader’s attention. The second piece of text is supporting the 6 separate images underneath it saying ‘the icons of the decade’.  This will make the fans of the bands will want to buy the products because they get a free poster in the magazine of their favourite band. The colours on the front cover all represent the key theme of Christmas; the key colours are red and white. The masthead is filled in a florescent red with a white border and a snow pile on the top of the title. Practically everything on the page is in white and red, which does give an overall theme of Christmas, which represents the date and the theme of the magazine.
Institution:
The institution for this magazine is the producers of NME magazine, the genre of this magazine is a controversial one, it has no set genre and varies over the weeks. One week the genre could be pop the next week the genre could be rock/ alternative rock of indie. Having a music variety doesn’t also distinguish what NME stands for; it also helps a variety of different target audience as the magazine doesn’t have just one genre. Distributing a magazine is reasonably easy and it’s an effective way of selling bands to the audience. NME tend to put well known bands or music producers who are liked by a variety of people, this is very effective as more people will want to buy the product because they may want to know interesting facts about bands and producers like Simon Cowell.
Ideology:
The ideology of the magazine is music and business. The ideology also varies like the genre as when the magazine is displaying all the different bands the ideology changes due to the style of the band. The ideology for this particular edition of the NME magazine is business, alternative rock and Christmas. The ideology of using Simon Cowell on the front cover brings a stereotypical business person to the magazine, as Simon Cowell is all about business and can be cruel but he gets straight down to business.
Audience:
Like ideology the audience for this magazine varies greatly, the audience tends to be based on the genre of the magazine. For this edition the Audience may be business men/women, alternative rock and people who are fans of Simon Cowell.  There is not a set sex for this magazine, the magazine is based on both sexes and will appeal to both female and male. In my opinion I think that using a mixed audience is very effective as the magazine will not appeal to one group but will attract nearly everyone.
Representation:
The representation for this magazine is a positive one as well as having a stereotypical feel. The positive view that is seen in this magazine is of Christmas. Christmas is meant to be a time of happiness, using the theme of Christmas creates a positive and happy feel to the magazine and will make the audience want to buy the product. The stereotypical side of this magazine is that of a business man, people who are usually in business tend to be nasty and moody revering to Simon Cowell as ‘the grinch’ is creating a stereotype of business men. The genre of the magazine represents all of the audience, the genre is a controversial one. The reason why this represents the audience is due to the fast amount of different people who buy the product making the magazine more and more successful.

Contents Page
Language:

Like many contents page, the main image displays the main artists that are featured in the magazine, the picture of the band is in a low angle, medium long shot. It displays them performing, holding guitars which links with the genre of the magazine which is rock. This is very effective as Oasis are one of the top bands in the world and have an incredibly fast growing fan base and are liked all aroung the world. therefore Persuading people to buying the magazine as the stories inside appeal to them.
The title "THIS WEEK"  is displayed to the top of the page, the writing is in big capatilised letters and is the biggest piece of text of the page. Therfore this stands out the audience in order to enhance the excitement of the articles that are featured in the magazine. The title is alongside the masthead of the front page of the magazine, which empthasises that the excitement is in this magazine and not in any other magazine. Also alongside the title is the date of the issue, showing that the articles that are featured in the magazine are up to date. The anchorage "...Oasis kicked of their world tour'' is highly exciting to the reader as it links the images as well as gives the audience a taste of what the article features. The use of ellipsis at the begining of the anchorage instead of the end, creates greater suspense. This is because it makes the audience want to read on and therefore engaging a wider range audience. The features section tends to be displayed to the right hand side of the page, the features section displays a range of information which helps to organise what articles features where. This helps to keep a professional and orderly fashion to the magazine, which maintains an upper-class audience as well as a more immature audience. Page numbers are highly important as they link in with the previous point of maintaining an orderly and professional manner,as well as helping the audience to indicate what pages each article are on.
A continous colour scheme of red, black and white are used throughout NME, the significance of this, is that it maintains a continous house style, to which the audience can relate to. The colour scheme, creates the genre of the magazine, as red is particulary related to Sex, whilst the colours black and white relate to the music genre of rock and roll. This therefore links to the band Oasis, as they are a rock widely associated rock band who relate to the youth of today, as they are obsessed with Sex, and rock and roll.

Double page spread

Language:
The main image displays the Group 'The Teenagers in medium long shot, this is to address what genre the band is by displaying what kind of the clothes they wear which is indie rock. This shows that NME have no fixed genre as they display a range of different bands, throughout their magazine. The page title, is shown at the top left hand corner of the page, this is used to indicate what the page contains. The name of the artists, is in a large clear font, which is placed in the middle of the pages as some of the text drags over the page. Creating a big impact amongst the other articles, as it stands out to the audience as its quirky and exciting to the audience and is not boring which the audience can relate to. This also relates to the band, because they are young, quirky and extremely funny. The splash "NME LOVES" is featured, above the title, linking it with the name of the band, which is highly effective as it strongly introduces the band and ensures and attracts the audience into reading the article. Some text is highlighted in a large, bold and colourful font, to display factual importances about the band, that the audience will find intreging.
The introduction to the article is situated above the article, the introduction has to be precise, catchy and clear. Significantly, it  has to sum up the article in a catchy form, in order to engage the reader. The article itself is writen in two neatly formed columns and is writen in a small clear font, to make it easier for the audience to read. The article features highlighted quotes from the article, to create excitement to encourage the writer into reading the article. most double page spreads, often contains extra information columns, such as contact details, to get in touch with the editort. Like many double page spreads, there is a continuous colour scheme used over the two pages. The colours black and white are often used in NME, they help to obtain a constant house style. These colours are professional, as well as clear, using them on text will only make it easier to read the text. The colour blue, relates to the band, as the band is an all boy band, the colour blue is associate with men this may also be the case when relating the article the audience. The Teenagers band, may be dominated by male fans. However this may not be the case, it may well be that this is a prevared colour by the band or it may perhaps be used to attract the audience.

L.I.I.A.R

Language

The language is what the Music Magazine has to contain in order for it to be successful:

The first is the Masthead. The masthead tends to always be situated to the top of the magazine, which isd a dominant Icon in order for it to be noticed. The masthead is the biggest piece of text on the page, however it only tends to be one word in order for it to stick in the audience head. This also attracts the reader to buy the product as it stands out to them.
The main image, is the biggest image that is presented on the page. For a music magazine such  (full page) must be an MCU (face and shoulders only) and the subjects face must be able to be clearly seen, and make eye contact with the audience.
-Bright colour scheme with clear house-style of two or three main colours. These are used to relate to the different artists or to attract the reader into buying the product.
- Thumbnail images that illustrate other articles
- Anchorage is the main text that explains the image,  this is a lure which attract the reader to read about the person who is featuring in the image.
- Price & barcode tend to be situated to the bottom right hand side of the page, these are essential as they are needed for a person to purchase a magazine.
- Teasing contents along the bottom
- Competitions and free gifts
- Main article / feature advertised must relate to the the main image.

Institution

Perhaps you could pretend that you are producing a magazine for an existing publisher, whose other publications have something in common with yours / are totally different to yours (gap in the market)

Ideology

What message / moral / values do you intend your magazine to convey about your chosen College and your target audience?

Audience

Briefly outline the target audience (you can develop it later when you've made more decisions)

Representation
How do you intend your target audience / College / and the students of that College to be represented? i.e. positively / negatively / accurately / stereotypically / unconventionally?

Conventions of a music magazine

The first convention of a magazine is the Masthead. The Masthead is the title of the Magazine, it tends to be located at the top left hand side of the front cover. The reason in why this is located in this area is because it is the first convention that the audience look for when trying to locate a magazine.

The second convention that the audience immediately look at is the left third. The left third is situated and takes up the left section of the magazine, it tends to have most of the infromation of the contents that is featuring in this particular magazine. The reason why the left  third is situated in this place is due to the layout of the magazine on the shelfs in shop. The left hand side of the magazine is showing, this is why most of the text is in bold writing and stands out to the audience to make sure that they by the magazine.

The cover lines tend to link in with the image, by telling the story off the image. the cover lines can be situated anywhere on the page, however they tend to be under the image. most of cover line are quotes from an article that links in with the image.

sell lines are the line that is always used in order to sell the magazine, the sell lines act like slogans and they will constantly use the same sell line. The sell line is located under the name of the magazine, to make sure that you read it.

the barcode, is generally used towards the bottom right hand side of a magazine, whereas in newspapers it is used to the back off the news paper. The date line is the date and the issue off the magazine. The date line, has to be used in every issue off the magazine, the dateline is used towards the top or the bottom of the magazine.
Tthe splash is the whole image of the magazine, which has to include everything in it.

The credits show the particular person who has written a particular aricle, it is used to credit them for the work that they have been producing. The skyline is situated to the top of the magazine about the masthead, the reason why this is located in this particular area is beacuse it uses a range of words that are used in order for the magazine to stand out.

graphology is the way in which the page has been laid out, structured and the way all off the conventions come together. the colour schemes is the way the colours set the mood of the magazine, it also defines the audience in which the producers are trying to target. if you where to use bright bubbly colours then your trying to attract a younger audience, whereas if you used darker colours then your trying to attract an older more sophisticated audience.

vocabulry is the use or words that are used to catch the readers attention.

images can be located anywhere on the page, however they tend to be to the right hand side of the page. most of the pictures are medium close up, this is in order for the reader to see facial expressions.

anchorage is the text that explains an image,  this is a lure which attract the reader to read about the person who is featuring in the image.
The teller is the information that is given that tells you more about the magazine, this is used in order for people to buy the product. The kicker is used to tell you to go to a particular page. Flash is the influential part of the magazine that satnds out, it tends to tell you how successful the magazine is for example is would say 'best selling magazine of 2010'. The screamers are the big headline that are used in order for the reader to buy the product.

Final Front Cover, Contents page and LIIAR Analysis

Evaluation
Language
In order to do my College Magazine, there was a range of different language features that I had to use in order to make my magazine successful.
For my background, out of all the pictures that I took, I decided to use a picture that displayed a student. The shot of the student is in medium close up, the image shows the student sat down outside the Ash building in the gardens, and he is holding his books. My reason for using this image in the background, as I believe the student will represent the student and the College in a positive way. Because the student is holding his books in his arms, shows that he is dedicated to his College studies. This Creates the impression that he is so dedicated to his studies, which represents the College in a positive as it makes the audience believe that all the students at Wyke are dedicated to their studies. Due to the usage of anchorage the impression that he is dedicated to his favourite subject ‘Photography’, this creates a positive representation of the college as it shows the student are willingly happy to the subjects they have chosen. The Anchorage is also in purple, which links in with the Wyke text in the masthead, which makes the text stand out more to the audience. There is also another impression that is created, is that at Wyke people are dedicated to their studies but there is a more relaxed and laid back approach to College and studies. This is represented through the student sat down holding his books. The Masthead on my magazine is called ‘Wyke College’. I decided to situate the masthead to the top of the Magazine; the reason for this is the Masthead is the biggest piece of text on the page. This makes the name of the magazine stand out more, which will make the audience want to buy the Product. The barcode is situated to the bottom right hand side of the Magazine; above the barcode is the price of the magazine. The Barcode is big and white, which stands out from the background, the Price is also in white and is a bold text. This is effective as when people look at the Barcode they immediately see the price of the magazine. This means they will know the Price of the magazine and the magazine is reasonably cheap. The date and issue of the magazine is situated to the bottom left hand side of the magazine, the colour of the text is in a lime green. This stands out in the background, which means that the audience will know the date and issue. Therefore this means that the audience will know whether or not it is the right issue and if the issue is outdated. Another convention that i used was flash. The Flash is situated above the date and issue on the magazine, the flash is the map of Africa, which is in a white background. In the map is a purple text that says ‘Africa 2012’, which stands out from the white background. The effectiveness of this is that it stands out from the background and will make the audience want to buy the magazine as they will want to know more about the article that is in the blob. This is also effective as the map and the text link in with one another, this symbolises where the Wyke students are visiting Africa to do charity work. I wanted to arrange the colours to ensure that they blend and link in with the articles that are featured in the left third and the masthead. The colour of the text ‘Wyke’ is in purple, as purple is the colour that is used to represent Wyke. The text ‘Africa 2012’ is also in purple, this links the trip and the College together as it shows that the students are going to represent the college in Africa. The word ‘College’ in the masthead is in white, the rest of the text that is on the page is also in white. This shows that the articles link in with the College and the magazine.
Institution
The institution for this magazine is Wyke College. Distributing the magazine is an easy, cheap and effective way of advertising the College. Producing the magazine will also involve all the parents, students and the community into all the events that happens at the College.
Ideology
The message that the magazine gets across to the target audience is a positive one, however there is also a stereotypical message that has been used.
Audience
The intended target audience for my magazine is; students who are currently attending the College, Students wishing to start the College in the future, parents of the students and people who live in the surrounding area. The magazine is aimed at both sexes, as i wanted to be able to relate to both females and males. I thought these particular groups of people would be a good variety for the target audience, as they all may be interested in knowing what’s happening at the College and what kind of events the College have.  I decided to attract the audience by using a range of different conventions that will catch the audience eye. I used a masthead, splash, image and bright colours to make the magazine stand out.
Representation
In order to represent the product in a positive way, I wanted to display activities that the students are doing in order to help other people. This is why I decided to use splash, as it stands out to the reader and will make them want to read more about the Africa 2012 trip. This is due to the splash being the shape of Africa which symbolises the college visiting Africa in 2012. The anchorage that is placed over the image of the student encourages the representation in a positive way. Because the Anchorage is showing that the student is dedicated to his work, giving the audience the impression that all students at Wyke are like this. For parents this will persuade them to buy the product as they will want their son/daughter to be just as dedicated to their work. Students who are looking to do As Photography this will give them an insight to what they have to do in this subject. As well as producing a magazine that only displays the positives of the College, I wanted to create a stereotypical perspective that the audience expect to see from a good College. This is why my decision to try and make the audience believe that the student is dedicated to his work is shown in the image and the Anchorage. I believe this makes the audience believe that he has true dedication to the college and to his studies. I also did this by using the colours of wyke in the image, such as purple and white. I tried to represent the College in a fun way as well as positive or stereotypical, I did this to make sure that the College appeals to the target audience by showing them that College is not all books and work, but you are able to have a fun experience whilst studying. This is why I took into consideration the Wyke Halloween party, the text is in white and purple which stand out from the background so it’s easily noticeable.

Drafts

The reason why i did not use this as my front cover, is because i didnt believe that the Cover would have appealled to my target audience. I also believe that the image wasnt good enough to use on the front cover as it the student was in the left third and i thought this wasnt appropiate.

I was originally  going to use this as my front cover as i found it quite appealing, however i decided that i wanted to go for a more relaxed approach towards the magazine as well as a positive approach. My final front cover is the perfect front cover for my magazine.

Pictures

I like this image, because it shows the student and the building in a positive way. However i  am not going to use this image as the Student is not close enough to the camera. The student is also covering up the Ash building sign and i think this is not a good representation of the building that the Student is stood infront off.

I think that this is a good image as you are able to see the name of the building and the student properly. The only problem with this picture is i will not be able to use this as the Ash sign is in the left third. This is where i will put all the information about what will be featured in the magazine.

I also think that this will be a good image, this is very similar to the picture that is shown above. This means that i would also not be able to use this image as my front cover as the sign is in the left third

Out of all the pictures that i took, I liked this one the most. This is because it shows the student in a positive way. However i wouldnt be able to use this image as the background of my front cover as it doesnt show the student in medium close up. I would be able to cut the student out of the picture and use the student on a different background.

I really like this picture, as it shows the student and three other students in the background. The image also displays the building oak and you can see the sign clearly. Also in the image you are able to see the library, this is good as the library is where many students do there student, which links in with the student who is in the image who is holding his work.

Audience and Price

My Magazine will not be based on a specific social group, I want my Magazine to appeal to everyone at the College including Students and teachers. My magazine will be posted every month, and will have a seasonal theme, as it is coming upto Halloween and bonfire night articles will be printed into the magazine about the recent events. As the college is an academic college there will be recent articles about all the college deadlines such as UCAS. I will also have articles relating the sports department, media, english and music.

The Christmas edition for my magazine will be free, However through out the year the cost of the magazine will be no more then £1.00. As i want to keep my price at a low cost to ensure that everyone will be able to purchase my magazine.
